Lesson 11 of 22

Handling multiple visuals

When the task contains two or more visuals, cover each one. Check whether their measures, populations, and time periods match before combining them.

For example, one table might show subject enrolment, while another shows completion rates. A subject can have the largest intake and a lower completion rate. These are compatible observations, but neither measure can replace the other.

An original planning example

SubjectEnrolled studentsCompletion rate
Design50082%
Computing80075%
Business60090%

Possible overview: “Overall, computing attracted the largest number of students, whereas business recorded the highest completion rate. Design had the smallest intake.”

Possible grouping: describe enrolment in one paragraph and compare completion rates in another. You could also group by subject if that creates a clearer report. Avoid multiplying percentages by enrolment totals unless the task makes clear that the measures refer to the same cohort.

The main risks are ignoring one visual, spending most of the answer on minor details from one source, and claiming a relationship the information cannot establish. Use your introduction and overview to signal the scope of the whole task.
