Lesson 2 of 14
Matching headings
Work out why a paragraph is there, then choose the heading that covers that job.
First 10 seconds
Notice whether it explains a problem, a cause, a change or a solution.
Order clue
Heading options do not follow paragraph order.
How to answer
- Read the paragraph before committing to a heading.
- Put its central point into a short phrase of your own.
- Compare the closest headings with that phrase and check the entire paragraph.
Watch for
A striking detail can distract you from the reason the paragraph was written.
Before you move on
Would this heading still fit if the example were removed?
Worked example
The author lists obstacles to restoring a wetland, then explains how volunteers overcame them. A heading about overcoming obstacles covers the paragraph; one about a single plant does not.
