Lesson 5 of 14
Matching sentence endings
Choose an ending that completes both the meaning and grammar of each sentence.
First 10 seconds
Read the beginnings and see what kind of claim each makes.
Order clue
Beginnings commonly follow the passage; still verify each.
How to answer
- Locate the subject discussed by the sentence beginning.
- Read the relevant explanation without choosing an ending yet.
- Try plausible endings and reject any that add an unsupported cause or result.
Watch for
Grammatical fit alone does not establish the answer.
Before you move on
Read your completed sentence as a single claim.
Worked example
'The archive stayed open because ...' needs a reason. If donations covered its running costs, an ending about longer opening hours gives the wrong relationship.
