Grammar variety with control

Use structures because the meaning needs them

RelationshipStructureOriginal example
Explain a causebecause clause“I chose the evening class because it fitted my schedule.”
Add identifying detailrelative clause“The neighbour who helped me is a retired mechanic.”
Contrast expectation and realityalthough clause“Although the task looked simple, it took several attempts.”
Discuss a real possibilityif + present, future or modal“If the library stays open later, more commuters may visit.”
Imagine a different situationif + past, would/could“If I had more space, I’d grow vegetables.”
Evaluate a past alternativeif + past perfect, would have“If I’d checked the tyre earlier, I might have avoided the delay.”
Describe an action’s consequencewhich clause“The class was small, which made it easy to ask questions.”

Complex grammar is useful when it clarifies a relationship. It is not automatically better than a clear simple sentence. Mix sentence lengths so the listener has time to process the message.

Prevent overloading

If a sentence contains several conditions, relative clauses and contrasts, it may be difficult to finish accurately. Divide it at the point where the main idea changes. Original pair: “The class was small, which made feedback easier. However, it only ran once a week, so progress was quite gradual.” The relationships remain clear without one enormous sentence.

Build range through transformations

Start with “The place is useful. It is close to my home.” Combine it: “The place is useful because it is close to my home.” Add a contrast: “Although it’s close to my home, I rarely visit during the week.” Change the situation: “If it opened later, I’d visit more often.” Each version changes meaning as well as grammar.

Practice: select one structure you often avoid. Use it in five short, meaningful answers, then try it in a conversation without planning its exact wording. Review whether it remained accurate. Do not force a conditional into a question that only needs a factual answer.
