Lesson 6 of 14
True / False / Not Given
Compare a factual statement with what the passage actually establishes.
First 10 seconds
Notice words restricting time, quantity or certainty.
Order clue
Statements usually follow passage order.
How to answer
- Find the passage discussion of the statement.
- Compare the full claim, including words such as every, first or only.
- Use TRUE for support, FALSE for conflicting evidence and NOT GIVEN when a necessary fact is missing.
Watch for
Knowing the topic from elsewhere does not fill a gap in the passage.
Before you move on
For FALSE, identify the conflicting fact; for NOT GIVEN, identify what is missing.
Worked example
The passage says nine volunteers joined a survey. 'All volunteers lived nearby' is NOT GIVEN unless their homes are described. 'Only eight volunteers joined' is FALSE.
