Lesson 7 of 14
Yes / No / Not Given
Check whether the writer supports a stated opinion or claim.
First 10 seconds
Distinguish the writer's voice from reported opinions.
Order clue
Statements commonly follow the discussion.
How to answer
- Locate the discussion of the proposed view.
- Look for the writer's own evaluation or conclusion.
- Use YES for agreement, NO for opposition and NOT GIVEN if the writer's position cannot be established.
Watch for
A quotation does not automatically show the writer's agreement.
Before you move on
Does the evidence state whose view this is?
Worked example
The writer calls a proposed ticket charge unnecessary. A claim that the writer supports introducing it is NO. A comment about whether the charge is affordable may remain NOT GIVEN.
